Description Laurieston regeneration, Glasgow
Challenge Design and errect CUPLOK® scaffolding for the construction of two housing buildings

SGB (Formerly Harsco Infrastructure) is helping a £90 million regeneration scheme to bring affordable housing to the Gorbals area of Glasgow. SGB CUPLOK® scaffold system is providing access for the construction of new multi-storey housing in the city’s Laurieston district, and the project is serving to highlight both the versatility of the CUPLOK® system and the flexible nature of the service which Harsco provides.

The CUPLOK® scaffold system is being used to build two new 100-metre long, 4-storey apartment buildings. “This project requires us to be flexible in our approach, so that the construction work can progress as efficiently as possible,” says Harsco’s Site Service Manager, Michael Brennan. “As each new floor slab is added to the buildings the CUPLOK® needs to climb so that work can begin on the next level, and that means we need to have the right quantities of materials on site whenever they are needed. However we can’t afford to hold too much in stock as that could cause congestion on the site and interrupt the many other trades who are involved, so careful planning and close co-operation are proving to be the keys to success.”

CUPLOK® is a multi-purpose galvanised steel scaffold system, developed by SGB for general access, shoring and vertical load support applications. It features a unique node point design which allows up to four components to be connected in one simple action, making it much faster to erect than traditional scaffolding. Made from high grade tube that is 20% lighter than conventional tube, CUPLOK® is optimised for working at height, yet is highly damage-resistant and strong enough for use on the most demanding projects. This makes it ideal for numerous types of applications, including continuous façade, circular scaffold, birdcage access and staircase access towers.

Although Laurieston is a relatively straightforward project from a technical point of view, it does highlight the fact the CUPLOK® is a very flexible system. CUPLOK® is constantly evolving with features such as the scaffolder’s platform/step which can be fixed to each platform to allow installation of handrails to the next lift ensuring a safe working area at all time.
