Proven previous performance and the ability to provide a flexible and responsive service were two of the reasons why SGB (Formerly Harsco Infrastructure) was chosen to provide a full scaffolding and access solution for a brand new Cheshire housing development. The construction of the Stewart Milne Group Jersey Fields development in Middlewich has benefitted from the use of SGB’s Cuplok® scaffold system, which has been adapted to suit changing needs as construction has progressed.
"There are 83 timber-frame properties in a variety of styles on this site," says SGB Site Services manager Pat Diskin. "They include 2-bedroom terraced homes, 3-bedroom semi-detached homes and larger 4-bedroom homes, plus a block of apartments. The build schedule is largely being driven by sales of the properties, so planning ahead isn’t particularly easy on a project such as this. For that reason we’ve had to remain very flexible in terms of responding to whatever the client needs at any given moment."
Site conditions have also played a part in the project’s constantly evolving requirements as there was very little lay-down space on the site where equipment could be stored. Also equipment deliveries to site had to be timed carefully to ensure right quantities of Cuplok® available at the right times.
Although SGB had worked on previous successful projects for Stewart Milne in Glasgow and Monton, this was a first time experience for the Stewart Milne Site Manager, Neil Webb.

Since the Middlewich project began, SGB has secured two further scaffolding contracts from Stewart Milne, for residential developments in Chorley and Sandbach.
The SGB Cuplok® system being used on the Middlewich site is a fully galvanised, multi-purpose steel scaffold designed for general access, shoring and load support applications. It features a unique node point which allows up to four components to be connected in one fastening action. "Along with the fact that it is 20% lighter than a conventional tube scaffold this can certainly help to speed things up on a project like this where the scaffold has to be erected, struck and moved fairly frequently," adds Pat Diskin.
