The Compass Centre, Heathrow UK

Project facts

Description The Compass Centre, Heathrow
Client Balfour Beatty
Challenge Design, supply and erect a bespoke access scaffold for essential maintenance on a fully operational office.

The Compass Centre, the winner of the ‘Best Delivered Workplace’ award, serves as Heathrow Airport’s head office. It required access for external maintenance work including reglazing of a large quantity of glass panels.

The centre consists of three linearly arranged blocks with distinguished cladding and glazing. The blocks have glass atriums and are linked with glass tunnels which allows for additional natural light. The buildings were originally designed in 1992 and were refurbished in 2009 when Heathrow took the buildings over from British Airways.

On this site SGB (Formerly Harsco Infrastructure), working for the contractor Balfour Beatty, performed reglazing. The project site initially provided several challenges such as access to the building and limited storage for the site equipment. As the centre remained fully operational during the project SGB made it a priority to ensure no disruption to the centre daily activities was made and, timely and effectively, erected the scaffolding as soon as delivered.

The structure and arrangement of the buildings meant that the scaffold couldn’t be erected in the traditional way, as it couldn’t be attached to the building. The site team led by Anthony Burt supported by the design team headed by Brendan Fox developed and erected a free standing structure using Harsco’s CUPLOK scaffold. To access the top floor CUPLOK staircases were also installed on the site. To ensure complete protection for site operatives and reducing the chance of materials and rubbish fall full netting enclosure was installed too.

SGB  prides itself in providing outstanding service with high health & safety commitments. In February 2014 Balfour Beatty awarded the SGB site team the Supply Chain Safety Award for exemplary safety behaviours and excellent H&S skills and attitude.

'The SGB team on site and also in the design office have demonstrated a professional and dedicated approach to this sensitive project. They have taken on the challenges and delivered the temporary work solutions and installation safely and ahead of schedule. I have no doubt SGB will continue to deliver at the high standards experienced to date, and work with Balfour Beatty to bring the project to a safe and timely completion.'
